Americans for a United Ireland sends Easter greetings to all Irish Republican activists in Ireland, the United States, and around the world who are dedicated to realizing the 32 County Republic proclaimed on the steps of the GPO 109 years ago. We pledge our support and solidarity to the Yes for Unity campaign in particular, and thank them for their continued dedication and hard work.
Easter is a time for us to recall the sacrifices so many Irishmen and women have made in the fight for freedom. They could easily have decided to take the comfortable route, the route of collaboration with Britain. They could have enriched themselves and lived comfortable and safe lives. Instead, they chose to risk everything to assert the right of the Irish people to the ownership of Ireland. They dedicated themselves to the Republic that was declared on the steps of the GPO on Easter Monday, 1916, and overwhelmingly ratified by the Irish people in 1918. Today we are inspired by their courage and sacrifice.
We are also mindful today, that 109 years after the Easter Rising, Ireland is still not free. Six counties are still under British occupation, and the other 26 are governed by their collaborators. The people of the six counties continue to face some of the worst poverty and stagnation in Europe. In 2025, there are still men and women in Free State and British prisons because they refuse to abandon the Republican ideal. In particular, we send solidarity to Brendan McConville and John Paul Wootton, whose ongoing, unjust imprisonment is a miscarriage of justice.
Today, we rededicate ourselves to the Republic and to promoting its ideals here in the United States.
